My review and perspective on model: Navigator Lift-Away vacuum cleaner

This is the Shark Navigator Lift-Away Vacuum Cleaner Review please check the reviews page for a comparison of other vacuum cleaners.

As you will read later in the review, the Shark Navigator Lift-Away Vacuum Cleaner is little more than an average vacuum cleaner. Despite being average I have seen a lot of raving about how awesome it is. From a repairman's perspective I have to say that there is one major, and many minor design flaws that make me recommend the Hoover WindTunnel Bagless series over the Shark Navigator Lift-Away. The major flaw is that the hose connection of the lower unit to the dirt cup has a tendency to clog very easily. The minor flaws are that it is nearly double the price, with less power, and about equal build quality. In the same price range you could get a Hoover Platinum that is better construction, and has a separate canister unit... which increases reliability. The Hoover Platinum is a bagged unit though, so its operation and cleaning will be much cleaner than the Shark Navigator, and some people don't like to have to change bags.

The Shark Navigator Lift-Away Vacuum Cleaner is one of the (and actually often the number one) rated vacuum cleaners of the 2012 season. Much like Dyson I attribute this to good marketing. The Shark Navigator is a little less robust than your average vacuum cleaner, it's a little weaker than your average vacuum cleaner... so what is all of the rave about? Well, it is a lightweight vacuum cleaner, which means it's not going to do it's job as well as a heavier vacuum cleaner that digs into the carpet. Most people don't care about this though, they care more that the vacuum cleaner looks good, is quiet, and cleans the surface enough that they don't have to think about the dirt. If that is what you after, then by all means the Shark Navigator Lift-Away vacuum cleaner is great for you. It won't clean deep down in your carpet fibers, but it's a cheap vacuum cleaner that will last you a year or two, before the next big thing comes out in the vacuum cleaner world and impresses you with its performance that outstrips your old worn out Shark Navigator Lift-Away.

This is one area that the average vacuum cleaner manufacturer always wins in todays market place. They make vacuum cleaners out of plastic where parts and seals wear fast, they stress the motors with amperage too high for them weakening their power over time. All of this comes into play with the wow factor of a new vacuum cleaner. I see it in reviews of these top rated vacuum cleaners all the time, people comparing their worn out junk vacuum cleaners to a brand new junk vacuum cleaner are often impressed at how much better their new junk vacuum cleaner works... unaware of the rate at which this vacuum cleaner will deteriorate. The deterioration is gradual so the user thinks that the vacuum cleaner is working at the same level as it always has, then something new comes along and promises great things, the user tries it and finds its performance equal, or less than their old vacuum cleaners new performance... but better than its current performance. This difference in performance impresses the user who writes a rave review for the newest junk vacuum cleaner, thus perpetuating the cycle of junk vacuum cleaners being ranked at the top of the pack.

I've had the pleasure of being able to compare these brand new vacuum cleaners to 20+ year old Kirby's and the older Kirby still outperforms in terms of actually cleaning. There are things that many people don't like about Kirby's though, so as I stated before, if your goal of owning a vacuum cleaner is just to clean the surface enough that you don't have to think about it... then this vacuum will suffice just as much as any other vacuum cleaner in its market. If you want just a little bit more than this vacuum cleaner, and don't want to spend tons check out the Shark Navigator Professional Lift-Away it's sort of like the big brother to the Lift-Away.

The Navigator Lift-Away is a Residential vacuum designed for use in the Residential environment. I have reviewed it accordingly, the price point of the Navigator Lift-Away is set for the Residential industry which should be taken into consideration when purchasing or thinking about purchasing this vacuum. Commercial vacuum cleaners may be built to last longer and endure more abuse, but are more expensive and may be lacking some of the luxuries (such as light weight, or low noise) that you are accustomed to. On the contrary Residential vacuums are made at lower price points, lower quality, but are often lighter and quieter to use.
